Exciting Upcoming Events to Celebrate Second Chances Month!
Dear Friends,
To celebrate Second Chances Month, we are proud to share two important upcoming events with Texas Defender Service! To celebrate Second Chances Month, we are proud to share two important upcoming events with Texas Defender Service!
On April 29th, we are co-sponsoring a film screening and discussion of In their Hands, a documentary that tells the story of Ronnie Carrasquillo, who was sentenced to 600 years of incarceration when he was a child. Ronnie’s life was in the hands of a parole board whose decision making was swayed by shifting political sands rather than second chances and evidence-based decisions about public safety.
The screening and discussion will start on Tuesday, April 29th at 5:30pm CST. You can participate virtually or in person in Austin! We will be joined by the director, Dan Protess, and experts in the field. Click here to RSVP to join us in person in Austin or for details on how to watch the discussion virtually. You can also watch the film for free at any time on PBS’s website.
On April 28th, we will launch our new parole advocacy website, which will feature resources for incarcerated people and their loved ones on how to advocate for themselves in the parole process. If you have a loved one in prison in Texas, please join us on April 28th at 7:00pm CST for our first webinar introducing the site. Click here to register. We will walk through parole reviews step by step and share information on how you can empower your loved one during this complicated process. (If you can’t make it, don’t worry; this will be the first of many seminars for family members in the coming year!)
With gratitude,

Burke Butler
