A Year of Reflection and Evolution

Dear Supporters,

For Texas Defender Service, 2022 has been a year of reflection and evolution. With your input and encouragement, we have determined that now is the time for us to expand our mission to fight for the end of mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the Lone Star State. Together with you, we will champion the dignity and humanity of people harmed by mass incarceration and advocate for a legal system that is just, humane, and free from racism and cruelty. Our 2022 Impact Report has more on our vision for all that lies ahead.

But that vision is ambitious, and we can’t do it without your support. That’s why I am asking you to you give a generous gift to power our work in 2023 and beyond.

We are proud of the impact we’ve been able to make in 2022 because of your support. We halted an execution, saved four pre-trial clients from a death sentence, and protected a condemned client with an intellectual disability from the death penalty. We’ve spent 8,387 hours investigating the life histories of our clients and 780 hours providing deep trial consultation to capital trial teams across the State of Texas.

But there is so much work left to do. I hope you will consider a contribution today to power our fight for justice.

We look forward to the new year, and to advancing justice for all in Texas, in partnership with you.

With gratitude,

Burke Butler
